Join the Founders Team

July 9, 2019

Sunset Hills Lego Club (SHLC) is Sunset Hills Elementary School's newest club whose mission is to not only expose students to STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, and math) but to also promote creativity, confidence, leadership, and collaboration while having fun.  We are a 501(c)3 non-profit operating under the umbrella of the Sunset Hills Elementary PTA. Tax ID 95-3762411. We are a 100% volunteer, donation-based, on-campus club, and we need your support! Join the Founders Team to make the Sunset Hills Lego Club a success!

In the fall the Sunset Hills Lego Club will be participating in FIRST Lego League Jr. Program, the lead-in to the FIRST Lego League and Robotics clubs found at neighboring middle and high schools our students will attend (Black Mountain, Mesa Verde and Meadowbrook Middle Schools, Mt. Carmel and Westview High School.)  In the spring students participate in the biweekly Lego Challenge, such as "Build the tallest tower," "create an imaginary animal," or “design a marble maze.”  Students will present their creations to the group.

Sunset Hills needs and deserves your support.  Sunset Hills Elementary Schools is located in north Rancho Penasquitos in San Diego, California of the renowned Poway Unified School District.  In 2018-2019 Sunset Hills Elementary School served approximately 457 students in Transitional Kindergarten through Fifth grade.  The families of Sunset Hills represent more than 28 languages. Fifteen (15%) of our population are Limited English Language Learners. Twelve (12%) of our students qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

Please seriously consider making a lasting impact for our students at our much-loved school.  As a member of the SHLC Founders Team, your monetary contribution will help us buy the supplies needed to make the club a success and the supportive financial resources needed to establish a high-quality program for all.  In return your contribution will be recognized in multiple, effective ways. (Please see attached). If you have any questions, please email me at sunsetlegoclub@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Join the Sunset Hills Lego Club Founders Team

The primary goals of the Sunset Hills Lego Club Founders Team are to provide for the necessary supplies needed to get the club up and running when school begins in mid-August.  Based on initial responses, we expect at least 50 students to join our club, and we need enough supplies to support these students. (Loose Legos will be collected through in-kind donations from the student body and public and not funded via the Founders Team).  And of extreme importance, we want to make sure all students are welcome and included despite financial hardships.

Our secondary goals aim to further fulfill our mission.  Fully funding field trips ensures that all students don’t miss out on the great learning experiences that cannot be done at school.  And the Lego Mindstorm Educational kits introduce more advanced robotics and programming concepts to our older students.

Primary Goals:

  • To purchase 12 x Lego WeDo 2.0 Educational Kits, a one-time cost needed to participate in the FIRST Lego League Jr. Program.  Each of the robotics kits serve four kids at a time and cost $225.

  • To provide for scholarships for kids who qualify for financial support for the cost of club and Lego League registration.

Secondary Goals:

  • To fund Legoland Educational Field Trip for all students

  • To purchase at minimum 3 x Lego Mindstorm EV3 Educational Kits, a one-time cost.  Expands students' experience working with robotics and allows for 3 teams, optionally, to participate in the competitive FIRST Lego League Program (for grades 4-8).
